Early Purple Orchid

The varied underlying geology has helped shape the formation of a variety of soil types, from the infertile soils on the poorly drained sandstone of Black Down, to the more fertile soils of the calcarious grassland on Burrington ham. The resulting habitats are home to a wide range of interesting and in some cases rare flora and fauna. For this reason a large part of Burrington Ham and Black Down is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
